I made crumpets and it was easy!I’ve had crumpets a few times in packages from the grocery store. I always liked the airiness of them, and the satisfying squish when biting into them, but I never thought they had much flavor. My other half is British, and when I saw these crumpet rings, I thought it would be fun to make some as a surprise. This crumpet ring set made the entire process easy and quick. The set comes with 12 nonstick rings, so a person can make a full dozen at one time. The rings are rolled at each edge so there is no right or wrong way to drop them on the pan. The set also has a thin, flat spatula, tongs, and a silicone brush. I discovered that all these tools were exactly what I needed when I made the crumpets.I opted for a recipe that made 6, because if I mucked it up then it was less mess to toss. In the end, I got 5 crumpets because I poured a little bit too much batter in each of the rings. Now I know for next time.On to the process! The recipe was from a place called Warburtons, which is apparently a big crumpet maker in the UK. The batter took about 5 minutes to make as it’s only a few simple ingredients that I already had around the house. Then, it sits for 1/2 hour to become foamy and bubbly. I have a dough heating bowl for when yeast dough needs to rise, so I dropped the mixing bowl into the heated bowl and covered it for 1/2 hour. When I checked on it, the dough was bubbly just as it should be.The recipe said to put butter on each ring, and a little bit of butter in the nonstick pan, which I did. Start the heat at medium-high (I put my induction stove at 6). When the pan is hot, drop 1/4 cup of the batter into each ring. I eyed it and used too much in the first 4, then just the right amount in #5, and there was nothing left for ring #6. Oops!Let the crumpets cook on medium-high heat for 2 minutes, then turn the heat down to medium (I then put my stove at 5). Cook for another minute, then put the heat down to medium-low (I put my stove down to 3). Cook for another 3-4 minutes, then if you want, flip them for 30 seconds or so to get a little browning on the top side.I used the silicone brush to spread the butter around the pan before putting the rings in the pan. I used the tongs to pull the rings off after the first 2 minutes of cooking because I could see the bubbles forming and that the batter was unlikely to move, I used the thin flipper to lift and flip the crumpets, and to lift them out of the pan. All these utensils were exactly what I needed to get the job done and they all worked great! The end result was nothing short of spectacular. These cooked exactly as the recipe said they should, the rings did not stick at all to the batter, and the skinny flipper was perfect for working with crumpets. I brought the plate to my partner to show him my work of art and he was impressed. We then covered them in lemon curd and devoured them. Tomorrow I’m making a double batch!I want to mention that this kit would also be perfect for making English muffins, biscuits, smaller pancakes, and round eggs. I appreciate that none of the batter seeped under the rings when I poured it in, which means that the rings are nice and flat. Recommended.
