With long leaves and narrow, arrow-shaped bases, the small greenish flowers soon turn red, as does the whole plant at times. It’s fruit is in the form of small nutlets surrounded by a papery bract. This plant flowers from May to July and suits open, grassy areas. It’s habitat is almost always on acidic soil and usually avoids waterlogged areas.
